EXCHANGE: TRACKING TELECOMMUNICATIONS FOR THREE DECADES

Click here to see this page full-size and find out what was making telecoms news in 1989

Long ago, before there was the internet, the world wide web and email, when the first cellphones had just appeared in Australia, there was Telecom Australia: the monopoly, and its cousin OTC: the monopoly gateway to international communications.

But discontent with the status quo was widespread. Competition was coming. The world was changing. So I started Exchange: a weekly newsletter tracking these developments and all things telecommunications. No PDF in those days: hundreds of copies were printed each week, inserted into plastic bags with an address sheet, heat sealed and sent off in the mail.

That was 1989. The  technologies of news and telecommunications have changed dramatically in the intervening 30 years, and so has the industry: there are many more players, services and a much larger and more dynamic industry.

Which means there’s plenty of news, and plenty to comment on. That’s what Exchange is still all about.

If you would like to know more, and especially if you have any news tips. I’d love to hear from you.
