UTS to collaborate with Vietnam on IoT, industry 4.0 and AI

A group of academics from University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has secured a grant worth $200,000 for a project to connect Australian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with opportunities in Vietnam in industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, IoT, environment engineering, and big data.

The grant has come from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) Australia-Vietnam Enhanced Economic Engagement (AVEG) Pilot Program, set up support trade and investment between the two countries.

The two-year project will run from September 2021 to July 2023. UTS and partners in Vietnam, including the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology office in Sydney, Saigon Innovation Hub, and Vietnam National University (VNU)’s Ho Chi Minh University of Technology, will connect Australian SMEs with opportunities in Vietnam.

The project team include three Vietnamese researchers from UTS: Dr Nguyen Diep, Dr Dinh Thai Hoang and Professor
Nghiem Duc Long. Professor Long said partners under the project would create an information gateway on investment opportunities and areas of demand in Vietnam.

A number of workshops and forums will be organised to share information on how to start a business and ways to make innovative technologies more affordable and accessible to SMEs.

UTS is already engaged in the innovation ecosystem in Vietnam under UTS Rapido Vietnam, launched in 2020 with $1m of funding from the Australian Government’s Aus4Innovation program. Under the grant they will work with partners Vietnam National University, University of Engineering and Technology (VNU-UET)  and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) to equip rural communities in Vietnam with the tools to access and use real-time water quality data.

The project is applying emerging Industry 4.0 technologies to critical water systems to improve quality of life and aquaculture practice.
